FAQ's

Here you'll find answers to most of your questions

  • What type of transportation will we use?

Most of our tour options are based on a local perspective point of view, this is why we use a public transportation car on most of our tours. But every tour specifies the option of transportation.

We commonly use private transportation for the road tours and in other cases we rent tourist transportation.

On all the options there is insurance and certifications that helps us complete our tours with quality.

Please read the tour specs for more details on the transportation.

  • Are tours and activities family friendly?

Most of our tour options are Family Friendly. Only some have restrictions, and they will be specified in the tour information and description.

  • What is the crossing border time to the US?

The waiting time to cross from Mexico to the US depends a lot on the business days or even holidays. Commonly our tours and activities are scheduled to not be on the peak hours back to the US. But there is a small possibility that you will do more than 30 min walking back to US. Commonly, the traffic is by car.

To give you a better view, the city on the Border by Mexico side, Tijuana, is the living city for many people working on the other side (San Diego, US). Making this the peak crossing hours from Monday to Friday between 6:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. And on Sunday and Saturday it is possible to find more traffic in the evening.

But we leave you this link from US Customs where they give an estimate of the crossing time at the moment (a little accurate):

San Ysidro Pedestrian East entry: https://bwt.cbp.gov/details/09250401/PED

Select Mexican Border de San Ysidro – PedWest for the West Entry.

  • What is the crossing border time to Mexico?

The crossing border time from the US to Mexico on the entries we use is usually 20-40 min. approx. but some times goes al the way to 3 hours max. This is nothing that we can arrange. Most of the time it is faster than going by car. This is why we use it on most of our tours as our option to get into Mexico.

No worries, the times and hours we use to start or end our tours are relative to scape most of the peak hours. It also depends on the days.

Weekends are the most unpredictable because will depend on holidays on both countries.

This also depends on the documents you bring (see documents section on our FAQ) or any inconvenience with the governments. For this last one we will notify our travelers beforehand.

  • What to bring to the tour?

We always recommend bringing the necessary to do a tour as you would in any other city. Keep it simple, with not that much to leave behind because your backpack it’s giving you a hard time.

    • Passport is a must
    • Comfortable clothes and shoes
    • Professional cameras are allowed but always with a strap
    • Cell Phone are allowed. So you can share your pics on social media
    • Extra money is only needed if the tour doesn’t have amenities, $20-$30 USD per person is ok
    • Most of the places accept plastic (credit or debit cards)
    • Small backpack are ok if you like to bring your own water or professional camera

To check where and what is the best exchange rate for pesos MXN please read Exchange Money on our faqs.

  • What is and what isn’t permitted to enter US Customs?

There are plenty of regulation regarding what can go in to the US. This is why we give you this small list of things you can take with you to the US, and if you come from other countries please be advised that there can be other limitations on the airport.

    • Nothing that has fresh seeds
    • No fruits or vegetables
    • No spaces with seeds
    • Only 1 liter of any alcohol is permitted per person, well sealed (Tequila, Mezcal, etc)
    • Only a pack of 10 cigarettes is permitted per person
    • Some pharmacy drugs only with personal prescriptions
    • No piracy items (bags, CDs, music, phones)

This is just a general list of things, but our recommendation is to keep it simple.

  • Exchange money

We sure recommend to exchange money on the US side of the border, because most of the time the rate is better there.

Don’t worry, at the meetup spot ask your local guide to let you know where is best to exchange the money and remember to bring the necessary amount for your needs.

If the tour has amenities you will only need money for your souvenirs and if you are interested in something extra to drink. We recommend bringing no more than $15-$20 USD per person. If on any case you need more for some souvenir, we recommend to use plastic (credit or debit). You’ll get a better exchange rate on banks even if they charge an international fee.

If no amenities are provided on the tour, we recommend $20-$30 USD per person. No more than that.

Remember that in Mexico a gratification is common for the local guides, and they will appreciate any amount. We recommend a 10% (from the cost of the tour) but it will depend on how you feel they gave the tour and your possibilities.

  • Options if no passport (for US Citizen only)

This is an out of the ordinary exception if you don’t have a valid passport card or book. Only for US citizens, we recommend bringing a valid Driver License or ID, with Birth Certificate. This will work for MX and US customs. Keep clear that this option will be on your own discretion. Because the customs have the availability to not let you in or out. By saying this, we will not be responsible for any issues and cancellations, changes or refunds. For this refer to Cancellations, changes and refunds on our FAQs.

On Mexico customs you’ll be sent to secondary inspection (no big deal, just some extra questions). Also for the US customs there may be a secondary inspection with extra questions.

For Non-US Citizens please check this article: Options if no passport (for Non-US Citizen only).

  • Options if no passport (for Non-US Citizen)

For Non-US Citizen only a valid permit is required. ESTA, SATA or almost any permit is good, along with your passport.

Is a Passport needed for our experience and tours?

We recommend bringing a passport just because it will make your way in to Mexico faster and easier. If you don’t have a passport we recommend checking: options for no passport US Citizens or options for no passport Non-US Citizens.

  • What type of transportation will we use?

Most of our tour options are based on a local perspective point of view, this is why we use a public transportation car on most of our tours. But every tour specifies the option of transportation.

We commonly use private transportation for the road tours and in other cases we rent tourist transportation.

Please read the tour specs for more details on the transportation.

  • How safe is it to travel to Mexico?

Is it safe to travel to your hometown?, well if your answer is yes then travel to Mexico, or in this case Tijuana and the state of Baja California, Mexico (or Baja as the gringos call it). Is as safe as your hometown.

We know television and media have mentioned Tijuana, the border of Mexico or Mexico in general as not a safe place to travel. The reality is that as anywhere else you travel, it’s as safe as staying away from trouble and away from non-tourist sights.

Tijuana has been on the eye of the media for many reasons. And we can’t hide that there’s crime or drugs or problems with cartels. But the reality is that we stay away from that at all time and most of the time the suburbs of the city are the danger zones.

The trouble begins if you are looking for the trouble sights or trying to look for it.

We stay safe at all times and Baja, Mexico has grown because of tourism since 1920.

We have had famous visitors: Chef Ramsey (2019), Chef Anthony (2012), Barack Obama (2020) —to mention some.

  • Is there a permit needed to enter Mexico?
